How to Day Trade the US Stock Market as an Aussie

Updated 4 November 2026 (Australia/Sydney)

Want the volume, movers and overnight action of NYSE and Nasdaq from Australia? Here is the short version: know the Sydney clock, then trade on a platform built for active US day traders.

I am Demoniaco - ASX trader and educator. Most of this site is about the local cash market. When Aussies ask about US day trading, the answer I keep coming back to is TradeZero: direct market access, no Pattern Day Trader-style minimum balance to day trade, and a classic US platform stack.

Why trade US stocks from Australia

  • Huge liquidity - names like NVDA, TSLA and the big ETFs move with real size.
  • Volatility - openings and news windows throw up the kind of setups active traders hunt.
  • Overnight session - the US cash open lands after the ASX day, so it can fit around work (if you protect your sleep).

Prefer daytime local trading first? Start with the ASX resources hub or the beginners course.

US market hours in Sydney time

Regular US hours are 9:30am-4:00pm Eastern Time. Australia and the US flip daylight saving on different dates, so Sydney sees three common opens:

US regular session open and close in Sydney time
Season (Sydney)OpenClose
AEST vs US daylight (roughly Apr-Oct)11:30pm6:00am next day
Both on daylight saving (short windows)12:30am7:00am next day
AEDT vs US standard (roughly Nov-Mar)1:30am8:00am next day

Do not hard-code midnight for the whole year. Check Eastern Time, then convert to your city.

Why TradeZero for Aussie day traders

For active US cash trading from Australia, TradeZero is the platform I point people to. Not because it is "risk free" - because the product matches how day traders actually work.

  • Direct market access to US equities with a proper day-trading toolkit (Level 2, hotkeys, locates, scanners).
  • No Pattern Day Trader minimum to day trade. TradeZero International states there are no day trading restrictions, with a US$100 account minimum (margin accounts need US$500 equity to day trade with extra leverage). You are not locked out by the old US$25k PDT gate.
  • Fast deposits and withdrawals.
  • Classic US trading platforms - ZeroPro, TZ1, ZeroFree and ZeroMobile - the sort of stack US day traders recognise.
  • Platform pricing: welcome offers often include about 3 months of ZeroPro free. After that, ZeroPro is US$59 a month on TradeZero International's fee schedule. TZ1 and ZeroFree are listed at US$0 a month. Always confirm the current offer when you sign up.

TradeZero International is not an ASIC Australian broker - read the entity on your application and only fund what you can afford to lose.

How to get started

  1. Open an International account via TradeZero.
  2. Fund your account in USD. TradeZero only accepts USD deposits, so I personally use Wise to convert AUD to USD and send it across. Then pick a platform - ZeroPro if you want the full desktop suite.
  3. Set hard risk limits in AUD before the US open (max loss per day, max size per idea).
  4. Trade the open or stand down - do not force overnight FOMO.

Quick tips (and common mistakes)

  • Watch the DST shift - 11:30pm, 12:30am and 1:30am opens are not the same season.
  • Size risk in AUD. FX and brokerage both eat active traders.
  • Protect sleep. A blown night session is not a badge of honour.
  • For tax on foreign shares, talk to a registered tax adviser - do not wing it off a blog.

FAQ

What time does the US stock market open in Australia?

9:30am-4:00pm Eastern Time. In Sydney that is commonly 11:30pm-6:00am, 12:30am-7:00am or 1:30am-8:00am depending on daylight saving.

Do I need US$25,000 to day trade from Australia?

Not on TradeZero International. They publish no day trading restrictions, with a US$100 minimum (US$500 equity for margin day trading with extra leverage).

How much is the TradeZero platform?

ZeroPro is US$59 a month on the International fee schedule. TZ1 and ZeroFree are free. Welcome offers often include about 3 months of ZeroPro free - check current terms.

Why TradeZero over a local US-shares account?

If you want direct-access style day trading tools without a PDT-style cash minimum, TradeZero is built for that. Local ASIC brokers can still make sense for buy-and-hold or different protection needs.
